MADONNA AND THE PROVOCATION
Madonna had always been a provocative artist. She begun with her first live at the MTV music awards in 1984. She appeared in a wedding dress lying on the floor with a belt on which is wrote “Boy Toy” singing “Like a Virgin” and this image shocked people, because she combines the image of the virgin girl in her wedding dress and this belt which made of her a sex toy. Then she continued to provoke especially by attacking Catholic Religion and by talking freely about Sex. People remember her dancing in front of burning Crosses in her video clip “Like a Prayer”. This video clip shocked people because the burning crosses are the symbol of Ku Klux Klan and she kisses a black man who is representing Jesus Christ, and we can see her with holes in her hands like stigmata. After this affront to religion she is more and more watched by authorities. But she continued to express herself not being afraid to speak her mind.
After the religion Madonna shocked people with her book called “Sex” she says in introduction to this book “I’ll teach you how to fuck”. And she does it by showing erotic photos. This book is accompanied by an album called “Erotica”, with some songs talking about sex. Peoples are shocked by this freedom of thought, but fans are admiring this strong character and Madonna becomes an idol for people but also an example for other stars who use the same means of provocation like Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera who will also use sex in order to shock. She also shocks during the presidential elections in 1990, when she appeared in a TV spot wearing nothing but a cape in the shape of the American flag. In this spot, she asks people to go vote, and warns them that if they don't do it she will smack them... It turns out that people did go and vote, so Madonna’s provocation works again. Madonna also shocks in her Live performance like in her “Blond Ambition Tour” during which she sings “Like a Virgin” simulating a masturbation in a bed. This show shocked a lot of people even her father who told her to stop doing this in the performances to come. But Madonna is bad tempered and doesn’t listen to her father and continues to do what she wants to do and she answers by “Papa don’t preach”. In this song she talks about a woman who is pregnant and who wants to keep her baby unlike her father who wants the opposite. By this song she defends the women’s independence. Madonna continues over and over to provoke and she participates as a model to a Jean Paul Gaultier’s fashion show in which she wears a dress with her breasts exposed.
Madonna continues to express herself freely but one event changed her point of view: her daughter birth. When her daughter Lourdes was born she was metamorphosed and created a more personal album: "Ray of Light". After this quiet album Madonna, the provocative icon which agitated the religious and sexual taboos is metamorphosed to a new age star writing books for children and practices yoga, Pilates and Kabbalah. Spiritually renewed she criticises the wealth and success and denounces the corruption of the American dream. The ex-"Material Girl" wearing a Che Guevara-like beret exchanges her criticism aims and attacks religion and politics. She says in her “American life” song that she would like to express her extreme point of view and she does it. She criticises the Iraq’s war, by her video clip of this song in which we can see George Bush with Saddam Hussein laughing at a fashion show showing people wearing war clothes ending by the image of Madonna on a tank throwing a hand-grenade to George Bush and he uses it in order to light a cigar.
Her last live performance during her Confessions Tour shocked a lot of people especially religious peoples because she appears on a cross wearing a thorn crown. The Vatican's answer was to immediately forbid her to continue with this. But Madonna doesn’t care and continues. In Russia authorities also forbid her to do it, but she accepted to have a diner with Vladimir Poutine who invited her because his daughter is a fan of Madonna. In that dinner Madonna finally managed to persuade president Poutine to let her continue her show as it is.
In this week’s Paris Match Magazine, she says that what she writes in her books for children it is more shocking than her appearing on a cross: The fact that she explains to them what the world really is. We can say that, practically all that she has done is shocking in the literal sense, because what she wants is to cause a reaction among people. I think what disturbs people the most is the fact that it is a woman who dares to do all those things.
